About the Play:

The American Academy of Dramatic Arts recommends Otherwise Engaged for female and male monologues.

Otherwise Engaged won the 1975 Evening Standard and the New York Drama Critic's Circle Awards for Best Play.

Otherwise Engaged is a full-length comedy by Simon Gray. An intellectual refuses to become emotionally involved with his increasingly frustrated family and friends in this study of alienation.

Otherwise Engaged is a modern classic of English high comedy. Isolated university professor Simon Hench, completely and selfishly otherwise engaged in listening to Wagner, tries to enjoy a Saturday at home. But will his infuriating friends and relations let him? He is continually interrupted by students, friends, lovers and life. First staged in London and directed by Harold Pinter, this Simon Gray dark comedy was his most successful and – many claim – best-loved play.

Otherwise Engaged premiered in 1975 at the Queen's Theatre in the West End of London. The US premiere was 1976 at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. It then went to the National Theater in Washington, D.C. in 1977, before opening later that year at the Plymouth Theatre on Broadway in New York City. The play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and is regularly performed in regional repertory, college, and community theatre productions.
