About
the Play:
Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers is a
full-length drama by Makambe K. Simamba. Based on the
real-life murder of Trayvon Martin that launched the Black Lives
Matter movement, Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers
portrays both a rich human life and the violence that took it away.
What emerges is a prayer for the bereaved and a proclamation that
Black Lives Matter.
Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers
is one-person
play based on the killing of Trayvon Martin, whose Twitter nickname
was Slimm. The play's central character is a 17-year-old Black youth
in a hoodie named Slimm, who suddenly finds himself in the first
moments of his afterlife. He calls out for God. God does not respond. What happens
next is a sacred journey through the unknown. One performer
plays Slimm and other characters including his parents, as Slimm grapples with
story of how he lived and the violence that took him from his life,
family, and community. Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little
Brothers is a protest for all
Black life beyond headlines and hashtags, a prayer for all families
left behind, and a promise to the community that all Black lives
matter.
Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers
premiered in 2019 at Buddies
in bad Times Theatre in Toronto and received the Dora Mavor
Moore Award in 2019 for Outstanding New Play for Theatre for Young
Audiences.
