About the Play: paper
SERIES is a
full-length drama by David Yee.
A piece of paper can shape your life. It can record your history or build something new. A series of monologues that
imaginatively explore six lives and their curious connections to
something as inconsequential as a piece of paper. Particularly suitable for
schools and play contests.
paper SERIES is a
collection of six short plays that explore how we use paper to
create, amuse, define and communicate. An ill-advised waiter finds
new uses for fortune cookies, a counterfeiter's daughter learns the
family business, an unhappy orphan re-creates her parents from paper
cut-out dolls, a woman tries to write the perfect "Dear John"
letter, a cab driver replaces his taxi license with his medical
credentials, and a
man trades his relationship for an origami crane are the vibrant
characters who are brought to life in this anthology of six
monologues that use paper as a linking device for poignant
observations about immigrant experience and racial stereotypes. From
drama to comedy to crime-thriller, David Yee
brings us a variety of plots and characters in this series of
imaginative, thought-provoking vignettes. It is, at times, quiet and
reflective, raucous and violent… changing tone with every fold.
paper SERIES premiered in 2011 by Cahoots Theatre Company
at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, Ontario. Since then the play has
been staged at several professional theatres across
Canada, and performed
in high school and college theatre productions as a showcase of student talent.
