Plays from Primary Stages is a collection of seven plays produced by Primary Stages during their productive twenty year history Off-Broadway. All of these writers represent the best in American playwriting.
The Model Apartment is a full-length comedy by the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Donald Margulies. A haunting black comedy about a family struggling to put the Holocaust behind them. When Max and Lola, two Holocaust survivors from Brooklyn, retire to Florida, they find their new condo unfinished and are forced to spend the night in a "model apartment" where things are not always as they seem. In this brilliant and bizarre black comedy, Max and Lola soon realize that if they ever want to truly "retire," they must first confront the demons of their past. Winner of the Obie Award. Murder of Crows is a full-length dark comedy by Obie winner Mac Wellman that explores the toxic landscape of America. This harsh reality is set in a small-town where the water is polluted, the air is musty, and our world is on the verge on being completely inhabitable. A murder of crows follows a dysfunctional family living in a future where the world seems to be on the edge of total ecological devastation. This futuristic, dystopian inspired play will have you questioning our ecological lifestyle and how the world will look in the next ten-, fifteen-, and twenty-five years. The Fourth Wall is a full-length comedy by Off-Broadway favourite A.R. Gurney deals with a suburban Joan of Arc who takes her politics very seriously. In this love letter to the theatre, Gurney uses the stage to explore, quite comically, our place in the world today. Set in the living room of a contemporary, upper-class, Buffalo, New York couple, the author sharpens his wit on such topics as cola wars, politics, and even the very audiences who attend plays. When They Speak Of Rita by Daisy Foote tells the story of Rita, a viral New Hampshire housewife who after years of marriage, motherhood, meals cooked and coffee brewed, intends to ascertain what she needs and wants from life, in an attempt to find her own identity. Rita aches to know who she truly is, wishing to break away from the roles accorded to her from her husband, son, and community. (Cast: 2 female, 3 male)
Barefoot Boy With Shoes On is a full-length drama by Eddie Sanchez follows Rosario, a young man determined to create a better life for his unborn child. Don Juan In Chicago is a full-length comedy by David Ives. The play follows the adventures of Don Juan from 16th century Spain to present-day Chicago as he is blessed and cursed with eternal life – provided he sleeps with a different woman every day and never sleeps with the same woman twice. The complications of this quest get more and more difficult as the Don must grapple with modern sexual mores, the return of two previous lovers, his long-lost daughter and the Devil himself. (Cast: 3 female, 8 male)
You Should Be So Lucky is a riotously funny full-length comedy by Charles Busch. A contemporary Cinderella story set in Greenwich Village, that calls to mind the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s, with all of the eccentric touches that are Busch's trademark. Christopher, a young, gay electrologist, helps an elderly millionaire, Mr. Rosenberg, after the old man faints in the street. Rosenberg, touched by the shy young man's generous spirit, becomes his benefactor, until a surprise twist shakes up Christopher's world. (Cast: 3 female, 3 male)
