About the Play:

Winner of the 2004 Samuel French Canadian Playwriting Contest

Queen Milli of Galt is a full-length romantic comedy by Gary Kirkham. Based on a true story, a chance meeting between the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII, and Milli in her home of Galt, Ontario, leads to a merry war of wits and, eventually, love. In Milli, Edward sees escape from a life of obligation and duty, but Milli is not so quickly captivated by the dashing Duke. Will she succumb to his charms?

Queen Milli of Galt is based on a true story. In 1972, the Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII) dies while living in exile at the age of 78. Two weeks later in Canada, Millicent "Milli" Milroy, an 80 year-old woman from a small town named Galt has her tombstone engraved, claiming to be his wife. Did the man who gave up his throne for the woman he loved, forsake an earlier love? A young journalist appears at her door, eager for answers. Flashback to 1919 as Edward, then holding the official title of the Prince of Wales, visits Canada as an emissary of the King. Bored with the pomp and circumstance, he slips away from his official duties and begins a romance with the feisty and irresistible young Milli. A lovely romantic comedy with a handy supply of humour, this play is a genuinely witty exploration of unexpected love. Is it fact or fiction? It doesn't matter when an affair of the heart can't be forgotten.

Queen Milli of Galt premiered in 2001 at the King Street Theatre in Kitchener, Ontario. His first full-length play, it won the 2004 Samuel French Canadian Playwriting Contest, and has since been produced across Canada in regional repertory, college, and community theatre productions, including the Blyth Festival Theatre.

What people say:

"...engaging, moving, well deserving of the standing ovation." — The Citizen

"...a noble or elite character falling for an otherwise unremarkable member of a lower class - is certainly nothing new. But Gary Kirkham's script offers a lot that similar stories do not, including an emotional back story and remarkable character development that make the person of lower pedigree arguably the more interesting of the two main characters." — The Wellington Advertiser
