About
the Play:
The
Quest for Don Quixote is a full-length comedy adapted for the
stage by Mark Brown from the novel The Ingenious Hidalgo
Don Quixote of La Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. A play
about a struggling playwright faced with the daunting task of
adapting the massive literary classic of Don Quixote overnight. With
the help of his wisecracking agent and the people found in a
Starbucks where the writer has set up shop, the playwright churns out
a zany script and delightfully theatrical, hilarious retelling of
Cervantes's classic tale.
The
Quest for Don Quixote is comedic adaptation of a classic masterpiece, but with this
adaptation beginning in a Starbucks. Playwright Ben Eisenberg
is feverishly working on his stage adaptation of Don Quixote, with
rehearsals starting tomorrow. But there's one big problem – he
hasn't written a single word. In fact, he hasn't written anything in years,
and his status as wunderkind playwright is quickly fading to has-been
hack. His agent is apoplectic, the producer's advance is long since
spent and adapting a 1,000-page Renaissance adventure is beginning to
feel a bit like tilting at windmills. But then, whether from a stroke
of genius or a near-lethal dose of caffeine and Xanax,
Starbucks itself begins to transform, with patrons becoming characters in this delightfully theatrical, hilarious retelling of Cervantes'
classic tale. But all is not as it seems. Danger lurks in the
shadows, putting both the lives of Don Quixote and playwright Ben at risk. With
windmills, horses, and demons, The
Quest for Don Quixote is fast-paced comedy about writer's block and the ultimate in procrastination.
The
Quest for Don Quixote
had its world premiere in 2015 during the Arkansas New Play Festival
at Theatre Squared in Fayetteville. Since then it has been
consistently delighting audiences, and has become a staple of
community theatres, regional repertory houses, and high schools.
