About
the Play:
Seared is a full-length dramatic comedy by Theresa
Rebeck. A brilliant but temperamental chef creates a dish so good
it puts his struggling restaurant on the map, but success comes with
a side of chaos. As business booms, egos clash and loyalties are
tested. With its sharp dialogue and dynamic characters, Seared
is a feast for the senses that will leave audiences hungry for more.
Seared explores the passions and pressures of running a
successful restaurant. What is the recipe for success, and how many
can it serve? Brilliant, hot-headed chef Harry, who takes great pride
in his cooking, has created a new "signature dish" that is
attracting more customers. Now his brother and business partner,
Mike, whose money has enabled the struggling boutique restaurant to
keep going, finally sees profits within reach. The only problem is
Harry refuses to recreate his artistic masterpiece for the masses.
Mix in a shrewd restaurant consultant and a devoted waiter with
dreams of his own, and it all goes to hell in Seared, a
hilarious and insightful play that asks us to consider where art ends
and commerce begins.
Seared premiered in 2016 at the San Francisco Playhouse in
San Francisco. It was then produced in 2018 by the Williamstown
Theater Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts, before its
off-Broadway debit in 2019 at The Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space
in New York City. The play
has performed in regional and
college,
and community theatre productions.
