About the Play:

Shafted is a full-length drama by Esther Vincent. Futuristic play where the workforce and the government are almost at war. Sabotage, conspiracy, worker resistance, government control; in this world it has become dangerous to have a job.

Shafted is set some years in the future as a new city is being built. A fine new design, this city is partially underground and fully enclosed. A complete biosphere, protecting its inhabitants from the hostile environment that Earth has become. There is a large duct that runs the perimeter of the city. This duct provides the city with its climate controlled atmosphere. The setting for this play is inside one of those ducts. There are five workers in the the duct with the intent to repair damage from a recent slide. This is the first time this team has worked together. As they are there, the open end of the shaft is destroyed by a slide and they are trapped.

Shafted was first produced at the Union Theatre in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada in 1995. The Union Theatre was an important, accessible theatre for experimental plays, which was run by a revolving membership of artists from 1989 to 1996.

Cast: 5 women or men (flexible casting)
