About the Play:
Shakespeare's Will has long been a favourite of acting teachers for
Female Monologues.
Shakespeare's Will is a full-length drama by Vern
Thiessen. The play sheds light on an unexplored aspect of
Shakespeare's life by looking through the eyes and heart of Anne Hathaway, the woman
who spent a lifetime with – and without – the great poet. Shakespeare's
Will is a masterful, humorous solo show that has won high praise
around the world.
Shakespeare's Will approaches Shakespeare from a fresh and
humanizing angle. Loosely based on the few historical facts known
about the Bard, Anne, and their family life, Vern Thiessen,
winner of the Governor General's Award for his play Einstein's
Gift, provides voice to one of the most silent characters in
history: Anne Hathaway, accidental mother, proudly imperfect wife of
William Shakespeare, and defiantly liberated woman in Elizabethan
England. The play begins on the afternoon of Shakespeare's funeral.
Anne knows she must read her husband's will, but before she does, the
unreserved widow relives her colourful and unorthodox life. Shakespeare's Will is a lively, humorous and emotional
celebration of a life unbowed by tragedy and unapologetic in the face
of public scorn.
Shakespeare's Will premiered in 2005 at the Citadel Theatre
in Edmonton. Since then it has enjoyed over 100 productions, across Canada, in
Wales, England, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and the United
States.

What people say:

written … when the text is as good as Thiessen's … you need
little else besides." — The Globe and Mail

an intimate portrait of a woman left alone, a woman who, despite
abandonment, struggles to keep faith in her husband and the private
vow they made … a script wherein ideas, scenes, and words flow like
water….." — See Magazine
"Masterful. In theatre …
it's rare that you get something that is unequivocally, indisputably
great…. Every so often something comes along that deserves to be
gushed about. The hardest thing about reviewing it … is figuring
out where to begin praising it…." — Vue Weekly
"Strongly poetic …
meticulously crafted, exquisitely nuanced…." — Edmonton
Sun
