But a group of street-smart youths and their clever leader, Wiggins,
challenges Mr. Holmes to see past their delinquent reputations and
value their unique skills. Rediscover the beloved sleuth and solve
the mystery of how Sherlock's famed network of London spy-kids, the
Baker Street Irregulars, came to be!
Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregular is
rollicking romp through long-ago
London with the world's greatest detective and the world's most loyal
best friend. On a dare from her fellow street urchins, 14-year-old
Wiggins tries to pickpocket a strange old man. Not only is Wiggins
unsuccessful, but the old man, who is actually Sherlock Holmes in
disguise, manages to take the gold ring that was in Wiggins' pocket
and leave behind a note directing her where to go to get it back.
When Wiggins goes to 221B Baker Street to retrieve the ring, she is
shocked to find out how much Holmes knows about her based on a quick
observation. After Wiggins sees Holmes use the ring to solve a case,
Wiggins proposes to work as his assistant. Intrigued by her
potential, Holmes agrees to begin training Wiggins on a trial basis,
so long as she helps Mrs. Hudson with the chores. Holmes and the
ever-devoted Watson dig desperately through their long closed case
file to find which of three criminal masterminds from the past is
plotting against the famous sleuth. Can they discover the villain in
time to save Sherlock from harm's way – while keeping his longest
held secret? Wiggins and Holmes must learn to trust each other as
Wiggins and her group of street urchins help him solve two dangerous
mysteries: The Red Headed
League and The
Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.
Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregular was
originally performed in 2015 by the at Rose Theater in Omaha,
Nebraska. A suspenseful and exciting play that is fully appropriate
for school and community
theatre productions.
Cast: 5 to 12 female, 7 to 13 male, up to 13 either gender.
About the Playwright:
Brian Guehring is the award-winning American playwright in residence
of the Omaha Theatre Company for Young People, where he has premiered
many productions. He earned
his M.F.A. in theatre for young audiences from the University of
Texas at Austin.
