About the Play:
Silent Sky is a full-length romantic comedy by Lauren
Gunderson. With warm-hearted
wit and infectious joy, Silent Sky
tells the riveting true story of Henrietta Leavitt, a pioneering
scientist in an age when women couldn't even vote. Despite not being
allowed to touch a telescope at the Harvard Observatory, Henrietta
makes an amazing discovery. But will she get the credit? Will her
health give out before she gets the answers she’s seeking? Will her
family obligations keep her from the man she loves?
Silent Sky plays out
against a landscape of fierce sisterly love, early feminism, and
universe-revealing science
at the dawn of modern astronomy. It's the story of Henrietta
Leavitt, a Massachusetts pastor's daughter who leaves her home and
beloved sister for a job at Harvard University's Observatory. There
she isn't allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea.
Instead, she joins a group of women "computers," charting
the stars by studying photographic plates for a renowned astronomer
who calculates projects in "girl hours" and has no time for
the women's probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time,
attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also
take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication
to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. The
true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a
woman's place in society during a time of immense scientific
discoveries, when women's ideas were dismissed until men claimed
credit for them. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be
hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications;
Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their
dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.
If you liked the movie Hidden
Figures, you won't want to miss
this "luminously beautiful play" that will change how you
look at both the heavens and the earth.
Silent Sky premiered in 2011 on the Segerstrom Stage at
South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California as part of the Pacific Playwrights Festival.
The play was a hit and
enjoyed widespread acceptance among leading regional theatres, has
charmed critics and audiences across America, and become a popular
choice for school and community theatre productions.
