About
the Play:
Skin
& Liars contains to full-length dramas by Dennis Foon.
These two classic Canadian dramas,
one dealing with racism and the other with alcoholism, explore
pressing issues facing teenagers. Skin
is about
racism in all its insidious forms, and how it affects the self-image
of several teenagers. Liars
is about Jace and Lenny, both about 16, who couldn't be more
different, except for one secret they share: they each have a parent
who's a drunk.
Skin introduces us to a group of Canadian teenagers who are
coming of age in the late 1980s. Faced with racial discrimination,
Phiroza, Jennifer, and Tuan must navigate the choppy waters of high
school, each confronting his or her own set of challenges. Ranging
from academic difficulties, to budding relationships, to the trials
of adapting to a foreign language and culture, the three share their
stories of struggle, survival, and defiance of negative expectations
and racist attitudes.
Skin premiered in 1984
at Project One in
Vancouver and
has enjoyed numerous productions throughout North America (Cast: 2
women, 2 men).
In Liars, Lenny is at the top of her class. Jace seemingly
couldn't care less. By all appearances these two classmates are polar
opposites, but despite all their differences they are inexplicably
drawn towards one another. When it is revealed that each has been
trying to hide the same dark secret – that they share a home with
an alcoholic parent – each decides to take action and confront the
demon they call "Mom" or "Dad. "
Liars premiered in 1986
at Green Thumb Theatre in
Vancouver and has been
performed throughout Canada,
US, Israel (Cast: 3
women, 3 men).
