About the Play:
HARD TO FIND BOOK, only a very limited number of copies are still
available.
Snake in Fridge is a full-length horror-drama-comedy by
Brad Fraser. Six disparate
characters, all of whom are are into drugs, clubs and porn, live in
an old house. One of them commits a murder. Another sees it happen.
All of them seem to be in danger.
Snake in Fridge, which was inspired by Shirley Jackson's 1959 classic thriller The Haunting of Hill House, is about the sordid lives of a group of six twenty-something misfits
living in a creepy Victorian house in a run down part of downtown
Toronto. Their combined income barely covers club-going and drugs, so
overdue rent is mounting. Daydreams of fame and fortune are
constantly interrupted by the insidious lure of the porn industry.
When one of the housemates accepts a snake to cover a debt, the snake
disappears and bizarre things begin to happen in the home. What is the cause? The snake? The snake's spirit? Or the house itself that is
haunting them? The ghastly goings-on in this weirdo rooming house come to a head when the group – an internet
porn performer, a busboy who longs to be a waiter, a nude dancer, her
mentally-challenged sister, and a male stripper – discover that one
of their own may be a murderer.
Snake in Fridge was
commissioned by and first performed in 2000 at the Royal Exchange
Theatre in Manchester, England and won the Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for best new play. Its
US
premiere was in 2001
at The Actors' Theatre of San Francisco. Its New York premiere was in
2005 at the 14th Street Y in New York City.
Cast: 3 female, 4 male
What people say:
"...superbly slick [and]
technically inventive...." — The
Manchester Evening News
"If it sounds a little silly,
that's because it is. It's also fun in the grandest grand guignol
style. Equal parts camp and genuine drama, the play revels in its
surreality but keeps the emotional ties that bind as its core."
