About
the Play:
Somebody/Nobody has long been a favourite of acting teachers for Female Monologues, Female/Female Scenes, and Female/Male Scenes.
Somebody/Nobody is a full-length comedy by Jane Martin.
Sheena is a somebody who wants to be a nobody. Loli is a nobody
desperate to be a somebody. Sheena is seeking to leave the fame and
fanfare of B-movie stardom behind, while Loli would like nothing more
than to trade places with her. In this hilarious comedy about
Hollywood, fame, and the TMZ, renowned playwright Jane Martin
takes dead aim at the cult of celebrity and the price you pay for
it.
Somebody/Nobody takes a hard, if comedic, look at the world
of celebrity. So you think you want to be famous? So did Loli when
she arrived in Hollywood from Flatt, Kansas, only to find her dreams
of becoming 'a somebody' completely dashed. A fateful knock on the
door, however, and the appearance of teen idol and "shark-movie"
star Sheena Keener on her doorstep changes everything. The young
starlet is the darling of the press, the obsession of the paparazzi,
and the Goddess of the E! Channel, but she is being crushed by the
pressures of the fans, the hysteria. Now she doesn't want to be
famous anymore – in spite of her agent's wishes. As the two women
struggle to understand each other, Loli discovers that glamour isn't
all it's cracked up to be and Sheena discovers that there is actually
a world outside of the TMZ and the bright lights of the silver
screen. Throw in a vampire-wannabe stalker, a backwoods bounty hunter
and a Godzilla of a talent agent, and the result is a laugh-out-loud
rollercoaster ride on the road to fame through the Hollywood hills.
Somebody/Nobody is a laugh-out-loud look at modern life and
our unending quest for fifteen minutes of fame.
Somebody/Nobody premiered in 2008 at the Temple of Music
and Art in Tucson, Arizona. The
play puts its female characters front and centre and quickly became a favourite play on the
college circuit.

What people say:
"No question, it's a funny
show." — The Arizona Republic
"The comedy is off-beat and
beyond way out there, with an energy level that's full-bore, redline
action. Neil Simon this is definitely not... you might as well just
give in and start laughing at the beginning, because for sure you'll
be laughing by the end." — The Tuscon Citizen
"The script is wicked funny...
Laughing your ass off is a fine way to spend an evening." —
Phoenix New Times
About the Playwright:
Jane Martin, apparently from Kentucky, has been referred to
as "America's best known, unknown playwright". The name
Jane Martin is widely believed to be a pseudonym. She has been
nominated for the Pulitzer prize, and won the American Theatre
Critics Association New Play Award twice. But she has never made any
public appearances or spoken about any of her works. Nor has she ever
given an interview. No biographical details are known about her. No
photographs of Ms. Martin have ever been published.
