About
the Play:
Spike Heels has long been a favourite of acting
teachers for Female Monologues, Male Monologues, Female/Female Scenes, Female/Male Scenes, and Male/Male Scenes.
Spike Heels is a full-length romantic comedy by Theresa
Rebeck. A comic tale about sex, class, power … and a pair of
high heels. Theresa Rebeck uses her crafty and very often
hilarious writing style to delve into issues such as sexual
harassment and the implications of societal classism. Spike Heels
examines these themes through the lives of four complicated
characters, each in the depth of their own turmoil, as she explores a
four-sided love triangle.
Spike Heels is a provocative contemporary comedy of manners
that explores the power play between the sexes, the American class
system, feminism, sex, and the possibility of a four-sided love
affair. This updated take on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion
by award-winning writer Theresa Rebeck deftly explores class
and gender politics as the four characters battle their way through
the unintended consequences of their morally ambiguous choices. The
combatants are a sexy, volatile young woman and three Back Bay types
a writer, a lawyer and a fiancee in sensible shoes. The setting is
Boston, the ending is happy and laughter abounds. Spike Heels
is a comedy right out of today's headlines about the "Me Too"
movement, but written in 1992. This play helps us laugh at ourselves
as we struggle to find appropriate ways to interact.
Spike Heels premiered in 1992 at the Second Stage Theater
off Broadway in New York. The play has become a
favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and has been performed in regional, college, and community theatre productions.
