About the Play:

Stag and Doe & Bed and Breakfast contains two full-length comedies by Mark Crawford. In Stag and Doe one couple's engagement-type party winds up shoehorned into the same hall as another couple's wedding reception. In Bed and Breakfast a gay man inherits a home from his deceased aunt and, with his partner, decides to open a bed and breakfast in a quaint little village.

Stage and Doe offers plenty of "pre-nuptial shenanigans." Bonnie and Brad, an engaged couple without much money, are at the community hall for a fundraising party to pay for their upcoming wedding. Their Maid of Honour, Dee, is still getting over being left at the altar seven years ago. And Jay just found out his entire catering staff is in jail! Another couple, Mandy and Rob, are getting married today. They lost the tent for their wedding in last night’s storm and demand to use the hall just until 9 p.m. It’s all happening at the same time, in the same community hall kitchen, in the same small town. Stag and Doe offers a laugh-filled look at a distinctly rural Canadian prenuptial tradition … and shines a light on the nature of love, marriage, and weddings. It premiered in 2015 at the Blyth Festival in Huron County, Ontario to critical acclaim and enthusiastic applause and quickly became one of the most-produced Canadian plays, with multiple subsequent productions across Canada. (Cast: 3 women, 2 men)

What people say:

"Crawford's script is as snappy and crisp as a well-written TV sitcom. The laughs come fast and furiously and often. It is a rousing, rural wedding farce… an enthusiastic standing ovation... You don’t have to live in the country to relate to this delightful comedy, which reminds us that all is not bliss when thoughts turn to tying the knot." — Waterloo Regional Record

Bed and Breakfast is about a gay couple, Brett and Drew, who decide to open a bed and breakfast when they're unexpectedly willed Aunt Maggie's century-old home in a town three hours from Toronto. In the city, they hate their jobs, want to move out of their tiny downtown condo and into a house, but get outbid on every house they attempt to buy. They begin to fall in love with the small town and the move out of the quick-paced city to transform the fixer-upper into a B&B in a quiet little tourist town. Two actors each play eleven characters – from narrow-minded rednecks and chatty girlfriends to awkward school boys and retirees. As the real estate rat race, reno-hell, and small town prejudices test the couple’s resolve, the boys discover the simple life is more complicated than they thought, with more than a few unexpected, comical twists along the way. Bed and Breakfast is a funny, deeply moving comedy about "being out" in small town Canada, skeletons in the closet, and finding a place to call home. It premiered in 2015 at the Thousand Islands Playhouse and was an instant critical and box office success. (Cast: 2 men)

What people say:

"I was skeptical about the play's billing as a "heartwarming comedy" ... But the play is truly both of those things. Literally, packed-house-laughing-out-loud-in-uni-son funny, and choke-back-tears moving. It turns on a dime from one emotion to another.." — Regina Leader Post
