About the Play:
Stick Fly has become a favourite of acting teachers for Female/Female Scenes, Female/Male Scenes, and Male/Male Scenes.
Stick Fly is a full-length
dramatic comedy by Lydia R. Diamond. How well do you know your
family? Your social class? Your race? Sensitive "Spoon"
LeVay and his brother "Flip" see their weekend at the
family home on Martha's Vineyard as a perfect opportunity to
introduce their girlfriends to their upper class African American
parents for the first time – at
the same time.
Stick Fly is
about a wealthy African American clan on Martha's Vineyard (which has
had a significant black population since colonial days) wrestling
with interracial romances, sibling rivalry, and issues of class and
racial identification and parental expectations. Sensitive Kent LeVay
and his slick brother 'Spoon' see their weekend at the family home on
Martha's Vineyard as the perfect opportunity to introduce their
girlfriends to their upper class African American parents. Instead,
they stumble into a domestic powder keg that exposes secrets of
prejudice, hypocrisy and adultery
Stick Fly premiered in 2011 at
the Cort Theatre on Broadway in New York City. The
play enjoyed widespread acceptance among leading US regional
theatres, and premiered in Canada in 2017 at Studio 16 in Vancouver.
The play
has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and
workshops and is regularly performed in college and community theatre
productions.
