About the Play:

Story Theatre is a full-length comedy by Paul Sills. Second City founding director and improvisation legend Paul Sills created this widely acclaimed and groundbreaking play from ten familiar tales of Aesop and the Brothers Grimm.

Story Theatre is a theatrical presentation of 10 different medieval legends and fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. The sky falls... beasts sing... a mother's corpse is exhumed... a young maiden is poisoned... a master thief plies his trade... the goddess of love works her magic... a simpleton marries a princess... and a woman becomes Pope! All this and more happens in Story Theatre. Using improvisational theatre techniques, Paul Sills adapted some of the favourite stories from Aesop and the Brothers Grimm. Here you will meet again Henny Penny, The Golden Goose, Venus and the Cat, The Fisherman and His Wife, The Robber Baron, The Bremen Town Musicians, and other favourites. The fables require talented actors with expressive bodies. And make no mistakes about the quality: this is top drawer adult theatre.

Story Theatre premiered 1969 at Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. It opened to great acclaim in 1970 on Broadway in 1970 at the Ambassador Theatre, played 243 shows and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. Ideal for any high school, college, or community theatre group looking for something amusing and "different."
