About
the Play:
HARD TO FIND BOOK, only a very limited
number of copies are still available.
Strawberries in January (English-language version of Des
fraises en janvier) is a full-length comedy by Evelyne de la
Chenelière, translated by Morwyn Brebner. A delightful
and touching romantic comedy, Strawberries in January is a
witty play that takes the classic ingredients of romantic comedy:
love, humour, coincidence, and fantasy and serves them up with a
surprisingly tender twist when four young dreamers search of true
love, which can be as challenging as finding fresh strawberries in
the middle of winter.
Strawberries in January tells the story of four quirky
people who attempt to navigate the confusing terrain of romance. Do
you ever wish love could be more like the movies? Francois does. A
bartender and aspiring screenwriter, he loves Sophie. Sophie, who has
many adorable habits like pulling on the push door and
looking for love in all the wrong places, is still looking for Mr.
Right. Robert, a literature professor and a regular customer at the
cafe, could be Mr. Right, but he has both a secret he knows and one
he doesn't. Lea is searching for her childhood friend Sophie, unaware
that someone she once shared a night of passion with is also in town.
Love, coincidence, and seductive comedy make for an irresistible
combination in this charming love story for the romantically
challenged.
Des fraises en janvier premiered in 1999 at Montreal's
Theatre d'Aujourd'hui, played to sold-out houses, and won the Québec
Academy of Theatre's award for Best Original Play of 2000.
Strawberries in January in translation by Morwyn Brebner
had its English premiere in 2003 at the venerable Centaur
Theatre, the oldest English-language theatre in Montréal, and
continues to achieve popular and critical success. It has played
across Canada, in England, at the Edinburgh Festival, and has been
performed in college
theatre productions as a showcase of student talent.
