About
the Play:
Sunday on the Rocks is a full-length comedy by Theresa
Rebeck. Ever feel like having Scotch for breakfast? A humbling
and witty dark comedy which follows four women on their inevitable,
intimate journeys and illustrates how violence weaves its way into
their everyday lives. As they drink, joke and argue, it becomes clear
how difficult it is to make a moral decision in an increasingly
complex world.
Sunday on the Rocks is about four very different roommates
stepping into adulthood and struggling with issues of harassment,
sexual assault and abortion. On a beautiful Sunday morning in
mid-October, three house mates decide to have scotch for breakfast.
Elly is pregnant by a man she says she does not love, and is planning
an abortion. Jen is being harassed by a co-worker who is obsessed
with her. Gayle just feels a bit lost. Their problems are compounded
by a fourth roommate, Jessica, a religious young woman who has little
compassion for her beleaguered roommates. Though the ladies have
their ups and downs, their past and present situations are handled
with good humour as they try to cope with adult life in the
mid-1990s. Sunday on the Rocks is an irresistible look inside
the modern day female psyche played out in one unforgettable day that
will change all four roommates lives forever.
Sunday on the Rocks premiered in 1994 the Longwharf Theatre
in New Haven, Connecticut, and had its West Coast premiere in 2000 at
Company of Angels Theatre in Los Angeles. Her first produced
full-length play, it quickly became a favourite play on the college
circuit.
