About
the Play:
The Sunshine Boys is a full-length comedy by Neil Simon.
Ex-vaudevillians Willie Clark and Al Lewis reunite for a television
special – in spite of the fact that they can't stand each other –
but can they get through the sketch without killing one another? The
Sunshine Boys is a touching story full of memories, regrets, and
the laughter that accompanies lifelong friendship.
The Sunshine Boys centers on a famous vaudeville duo, who
haven't seen one another in decades – after a career-ending
falling-out – until a big TV network attempts to bring the two
legendary (and cranky) comics together for a special on the "History
of Comedy." Al Lewis and Willie Clark as "Lewis and Clark"
were the top-billed kings of comedy for over forty years. Now they
aren't even speaking. A staple on the Vaudeville circuit, they kept
audiences in stitches for decades, making six appearances on 'The Ed
Sullivan Show.' Now estranged for decades, when they agree (at the
request of Willie Clark's long-suffering nephew Ben) to reunite for
one last performance, a grudging reunion brings the two back
together, along with a flood of memories, miseries and laughs. This
classic comedy of showbiz and friendship pays tribute to the history
of comic theatre in the old Catskills Borscht Belt circuit and the
performers who made it so memorable.
The Sunshine Boys premiered in 1972 at the Broadhurst Theatre
on Broadway, ran for 538 performances and received a Tony nomination
for best play. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, who played the roles of
Oscar and Felix in the "Odd Couple" TV adaptation,
headlined the 1997 Broadway revival of the play, which ran for 230
performances. The play is
regularly performed in regional
repertory,
high school, college, and community theatre productions.

What people say:
"It's ham on wry...Simon's
sure footed craftsmanship and his one liners are as exquisitely apt
as ever." — The New York Post
"The Sunshine Boys
still works and probably always will. It's the author's most eloquent
statement on comedy as a defense system." — The New
York Times
"Another hit for Simon in a
shrewdly balanced, splendid and rather touching slice of the show biz
life." — New York Daily News
About the Playwright:
Neil Simon (1927-2018) was America's most prolific
playwright. He had dozens of plays and nearly as many major motion
pictures produced. He was showered with more Academy and Tony
nominations than any other writer, and is the only playwright to have
four Broadway productions running simultaneously. His plays have been
produced in dozens of languages, and in 1983 became the only living playwright to have a New York theatre, the Neil Simon Theatre, named in his honour. His true success, however, is in his unique way of
exposing something real in the American spirit.
