About the Book:

Tackling Text [and subtext] is an intensely practical handbook for actors on how to cope with text, subtext, character, and situation.

Having helped the actor with basic vocal technique in her enormously successful book, Finding Your Voice, voice coach and director Barbara Houseman here shows your how to cope with the demands posed by the text [and the subtext] of the play itself. Tackling Text [and subtext] is full of enjoyable and effective exercises that connect deeply and swiftly with the text, whether classical or modern, so the words sound as if they are your own. These principles work on every piece of writing whether it be Shakespeare, modern prose or a presentation to the board of directors. You will discover ways of charting your inner journey and will find the way to express a deep and subtle inner story that engages your audience.

Developed over many years of working with actors of all ages and experiences, Tackling Text [and subtext] is an indispensable handbook for any actor working with text – from acting students and young professionals, to experienced actors wanting to tackle specific problems and acting coaches wanting to discover new ways of enabling their students.
