About
the Play:
Tatjana in Color is a full-length drama by Julia Jordan.
In 1912 rural Austria, painter Egon Schiele was arrested and put on
trial for corrupting a minor. In Tatjana in Color, young
Tatjana accepts the offer of an orange from a mysterious man, and
thereby opens the door to a fascinating world of colour and art.
Julia Jordan skilfully twines truth and fiction to lead the
audience on a merry chase after love and morality.
Tatjana in Color is based on the life of an Austrian
Expressionist painter who is accused of having an improper
relationship with the twelve year-old daughter of a well-respected
retired naval officer – the subject of several of his nude
paintings. The story is loosely based on the true story of Tatjana
von Mossig, who would not testify against painter Egon Schiele in
1912. All they could prove was that she saw his paintings. He was
convicted and served twenty-eight days for "Corruption of
Morals." In life, he never painted her. This play imagines that
he had and tells the story from her point of view. Twelve-year-old
girls of any era can be relentless in the pursuit of grown-up things,
and Tatjana is no exception. Even as she becomes obsessed with such
adult pursuits as eating sweets, drinking coffee, and taking off her
clothes, she vents her frustrations at the restrictions childhood
imposes on her younger sister, Antonia. Tatjana discovers the
possibilities of a world larger than her 1912 Austrian village and
reaches toward the hot core of the something she feels growing inside
her. In the process, the women in her life help her discover how to
become more than a subject of art.
Tatjana in Color premiered in 1999 at Shepherd College during
the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown, West
Virginia. The New York premiere in 2003 was off-Broadway at The
Culture Project and won the Francesca Primus Prize and was
short-listed for the Susan Smith Blackburn Award. The
play has been
performed
in regional and
college theatre
productions.
