About
the Play:
The Circle is a full-length comedic drama by Geoffrey
Simon Brown. It's a high-school garage party: there's the genius,
the drug dealer, the runaway, the kid with ADHD, and the son of a
priest. Everyone's just trying to
fit in. The Circle is
an explosive SOS from an orphaned generation desperately
looking for a place to belong. Particularly
suitable for schools and play contests.
The Circle is a
hard-hitting, unsettling play about youth and belonging set in a
high-school garage party. Amanda is a genius. Ily is a dropout who
deals drugs.
Kit is a runaway. Mutt is a mess. Will is a shit disturber. Daniel
doesn't know what he's doing there. Everyone's a bit too drunk and a
bit too stoned and a bit uncomfortable in their own skin. Youth is a
dangerous time. How far will things stretch without breaking? It's an
explosive combination, but it's better than being alone on a Friday
night in suburbia. This
remarkable debut by Geoffrey Simon Brown is
about youthful immortality, violence and the creation of a family.
The Circle was developed
at The National Theatre School of Canada where it was presented by
the graduating class of 2014. It premiered in 2015 at the Martha
Cohen Theatre during Alberta
Theatre Projects National playRites Festival of New Plays in Calgary.
Since then the play
has been produced at professional theatres across Canada and
performed in high school and college theatre productions as a
showcase of student talent.
