About
the Play:
The Drunken City has
become
a favourite of acting teachers for Female Monologues, Male
Monologues, Female/Male
Scenes, and Male/Male
Scenes.
The Drunken City is a full-length comedy by Adam Bock.
Off on the bar crawl to end all
crawls, three brides-to-be find their lives going topsy-turvy when
one of them begins to question her future after a chance encounter
with a recently jilted handsome stranger. The Drunken City
is a wildly theatrical take on the mystique of marriage and the
ever-shifting nature of love and identity.
The Drunken City follows
three best friends out on the town for a bachelorette party in the
big city near their suburban homes, and the ways in which all those
pink drinks reveal the truth of their desires and the reality of
their relationships. Marnie is going on a bar-hopping party with two
of her best friends, Melissa and Linda, in celebration of her pending
nuptials. Linda is also engaged, and Melissa was as well, but she
abruptly broke up with her fiancé when she found out he was
two-timing her. After
they encounter strangers, Eddie and Frank, everything begins to fall
apart. When the bride-to-be questions her upcoming wedding, it
ripples through her friendships and creates a tectonic shift that
they may not all recover from. The Drunken City
explores friendship, marriage and honesty, and weaves a story about
the challenges of facing who we really are.
The Drunken City
premiered in 2008 at Playwrights Horizons in New
York City, receiving an Outer Critics nomination for Outstanding New
Off-Broadway Play. The
play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and
workshops and is regularly performed in regional and
college theatre productions.
