About the Play:
The Fly Fisher's Companion is a full-length dramatic comedy
by Michael Melski. A hilarious, heartfelt journey into the
lives of two men on their last fishing trip together. It's a trip
through decades, into ritual memory and imagination, and into a
relationship that has all the turbulent beauty and gentle grace of a
highland stream. The Fly Fisher's Companion is a moving,
hilarious story about male friendship.
The Fly Fisher's Companion is a heartwarming, funny and yet
poignant story of two lifelong friends who take one final fishing
trip to reconnect after years of estrangement. Optimistic writer Wes
and testy businessmen Don have survived war, marriages and each
other's company for over half a century. Having met in Grade 5 at a
fishing derby where one's line crossed the other, they formed an
unbreakable connection. They have returned to the fishing lodge they
built after the war for one last trip to cast their lines. It is
intended to be a weekend of fly fishing and bonding-two things the
estranged buddies haven’t done in ages. But things have changed
since these two old friends started fishing together. Lures, (f)lies,
and the big ones that got away aren't the only topics of conversation
at the cabin this weekend. A pressing issue hastens the need to
resolve decisions made by both over the years. A touching comedy
about two best buds wishing they could remember some things better,
and others they'd rather forget. This poignant and powerful play
explores love, loss and the hope for forgiveness against a background
of a complicated friendship and fading memories.
The Fly Fisher's Companion premiered to acclaim critical in
2005 at Ship's Company Theatre in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. Since
then the play was also a hit at professional theatres across Canada
and has become a staple of community theatres.
