About the Play:
The Lady Smith is a full-length dramatic comedy by Andrew
Moodie. What happens when the "other woman" becomes
your roommate? What happens when she starts to confide in you about
her affair? Rather than confront her husband when she discovers he is
being unfaithful, a blues singer moves in with the "other
woman."
The Lady Smith is a tale of betrayal and revenge, set in
the Black community of Toronto's Bloor and Bathurst neighbourhood,
which challenges the distance between deception and redemption. When
Sylvia answers a room for rent ad and moves in, her roomies do not
realize she's the wife of the married man one is having an affair
with. Andrew Moodie's dark and sexy comedy takes Mamie Smith,
the first person to record a blues song, as the icon who anchors the
work and helps Sylvia face her own blues.
The Lady Smith premiered in 2000 at Theatre Passe Muraille
in Toronto. It was then remounted in Montreal.
Cast: 3 female, 1 male
