About
the Play:
Finalist for the 2006 Governor
General's Award for Drama (Canadian Equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize)
The Optimists is a full-length dramatic
comedy by Morwyn Brebner. A
long held friendship is tested when two couples – one married, one
engaged – travel to Las Vegas for a wedding and are forced to
confront the different life paths each has taken. Questions of class,
mismatched partnerships and the messy nature of love challenge each
character, but a spirit of hope permeates.
The Optimists explores
dysfunctional relationships in this emotionally charged dramatic
comedy set in "Sin City". Where else would you get married
at sunrise with killer hangovers and then go to Denny's for
breakfast? Four Canadians find themselves in a Vegas Motel room. Two
plan to wed and the other two are already married. It's the night
before the chapel wedding and the promise of "happily ever
after." The old friends confront their regrets, lies, learn of
past betrayals and disappointments. "Let's believe that the half
of our life not yet lived is the good half." Will hope be the
elusive wild card? The chance for hopes and dreams to come true
provides the backdrop for Morwyn Brebner's
humorous look at love.
The Optimists premiered in 2004 at the Dr. Betty Mitchell
Theatre by Theatre Junction in Calgary and was nominated for the
Betty Mitchell Award for Best New Play and was a Finalist for the
Governor General's Award for Drama. Since
then the play has been successfully staged at several professional
theatres across Canada and has been mounted in fringe festivals.
