The Playwright’s Workbook is considered by many to the best practical guide to dramatic writing.

After years of teaching playwriting and drama courses in colleges throughout the United States, including Yale University, Princeton, Amherst College, New York University, Columbia University, and the University of Colorado, Jean-Claude van Itallie realized the need for a text that would provide exercises for playwriting students. The Playwright's Workbook is his primer for budding playwrights who want to master the art of writing for the theatre.

A series of 13 written workshops covering: conflict and character: the dominant image: Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller - Overheard voices: Ibsen and Shakespeare - The solo performance piece: listening for stories - Terror and vulnerability: Ionesco - The point of absurdity: creating without possessing: Pinter and Beckett - and much more.

What people say:

"Jean-Claude is the only playwriting teacher I ever had." — Tony Kushner

"The first book ever to allow students to go beyond the well-made play into the heart and soul of the twentieth century…. An incomparable contribution to the field." — Howard Stein, head, Dramatic Writing Programs, Yale Drama, Columbia

Jean-Claude van Itallie is one of the most distinguished playwrights of the American avant-garde. Born in Brussels in 1936, his family fled the Holocaust to America in 1940. He grew up on suburban Long Island, graduated Harvard in 1958, and in the 1960s was a seminal force in the explosive New York Off-Broadway theater. He may be best-known for his anti-Viet Nam war play America Hurrah and his translations of Chekhov's major plays. Author of The Playwright’s Workbook, he teaches writing and acting workshops.
