About the Play:
The Untold Yippie Project is a full-length dark comedy by
Becca Schlossberg. The year
was 1970. Tensions were running high globally, but in Disneyland, a
group of Yippies took over the Happiest Place on Earth to voice their
feelings. The protest forced the park to an early close. Inspired
by the real
events of the
day that Walt would rather forget.
The Untold Yippie Project
is an ensemble-based docudrama
that explores the impact of friendship, freedom of speech and
violence at a pivotal point in US history. In 1970, liberal America
seemed at the end of its rope. Out of the flower children and
free-loving hippies that has popularized the cultural landscape, a
new wave of radicals entered the scene: the Yippies. Avantgarde and
arrogant, the Yippies made their anti-war, anti-capitalist sentiments
well known with in your face activism. When Terry, a wild but weary
leader of the Yippies, gets an idea to organize a protest in
Disneyland, he's looking for a lot more than a chance to stick it to
the man; he's looking to dig into Clyde, a former Yippie and friend
who has betrayed him. Based on true events, The Untold
Yippie Project examines this
day from all sides: a manager at Disneyland, guests of the park, and
the rebels who led the protests, painting a picture of a both a
divided and united America.
The Untold Yippie Project premiered in 2017 in an
off-off-Broadway production by Sunglasses After Dark Productions at
the Access Theater in New York City.
