About the Play:

This is a full-length comedic drama by Melissa James Gibson. There is your first adult life full of hope and promise, and then there is your second adult life when an unexpected twist or turn drastically diverts your course. Four friends since college struggle with questions of marriage, loss, love, and loyalty. Sitting on the edge between comedic and painful, this bright, witty, un-romantic comedy dives into the anxieties and insecurities of five messy, imperfect – real – people navigating unforeseen circumstances without a road map.

This centres on a moment in the life of Jane and those closest to her. Jane is not okay. Jane's husband died over a year ago and his ashes are still sitting on top of her fridge. Struggling to raise her young daughter alone, she isn't really okay. Her longtime friends, married couple Marrell (a jazz singer) and Tom (a carpenter) try to cheer her up with party games and blind dates, but they are desperate for fun themselves, juggling a new baby and a relationship strained to the breaking point. Their wine-drinking, wisecracking friend Alan also tries to help, while a sexy (and French) Doctor-Without-Borders named Jean-Pierre incites temptation and perspective. An honest portrait of a group of 30-something friends navigating their way through death, parenthood, love and adultery.

This premiered in 2009 off-Broadway at the Playwrights' Horizons Mainstage. The play has been performed in regional repertory and college theatre productions.

What people say:

"Ms. Gibson graduates into the theatrical big leagues with this beautifully conceived, confidently executed and wholly accessible work, which is not just her finest to date but also the best new play to open Off-Broadway this fall. Its confused but lovable characters are drawn with a fine focus and a piercing emotional depth; the dialogue sparkles with exchanges as truthful as they are clever; and…the play's delicate pace, richly patterned wordplay and undercurrent of rue combine to cast a moving spell that lingers in the memory, like a sad-sweet pop song whose chorus you can’t shake." — New York Times
