About
the Play:
Three Changes has long been a favourite of acting teachers for Male Monologues and Male/Male Scenes.
Three Changes is a full-length dark comedy by Nicky
Silver. A comfortably married, Upper West Side couple get
an unexpected visit from the man's wayward brother, a Hollywood
producer. What at first seems a casual visit, a chance to
reconnect, is quickly revealed as something more ominous. He
may have had success in Hollywood,
but human connection is all that matters, and he intends to make
connections – no matter who pays the price.
Three Changes is a funny
and darkly suspenseful look at the joy of family, and how far we'll
go to get it. Nate and Laurel are a seemingly happy couple
living on New York's Upper West Side, busy, content and comfortable –
until the surprising arrival of Hal, Nate's long-lost brother. A
once-successful television writer, Hal is just out of rehab. He's out
of cash and alone in the world. But what seems to be a casual visit,
a chance to reconnect, is quickly revealed to be something much more
ominous. As he attempts to write his first novel, Hal insidiously
usurps Nate's place in the home. He unearths long-buried feelings in
Laurel and adds to the household by bringing in a young man, a
runaway, who seems to somehow complete the family. A family that
ultimately has no place for Nate. And as the play builds to its
climax, we understand that these two men, these brothers who have
tried to find a way to love each other, are locked in a battle that
will cost one of them their life.
Three Changes premiered in 2008 at the Mainstage Theater of
the Playwrights Horizons complex off-Broadway in New York City. The play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and has been performed in regional and college theatre
productions.

What people say:
"A born playwright, Nicky
Silver is a creator of language that unscrolls across the
stage like luminous skywriting. His instinctive theatrical
gracefulness is still in evidence in Three Changes,
[which] considers the hunger for a cohesive family in a fragmented
world."
— NY Times
"Silver's play leaves lots to
discuss on the way home… He's joining Lillian Hellman, Tracy Letts,
Edward Albee and Horton Foote in prying the truth loose from its
hiding places in family dramas." — DCTheatreScene.com
