About
the Play:
Torch Song is a full-length comedy by Harvey Fierstein.
In Torch Song
– the condensed two-act version of Harvey Fierstein's
award-winning Torch Song Trilogy
– the life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag
queen living in New York City, is dramatized over the span of the
late 1970s and 1980s, through Stonewall, and the AIDS crises, and other ground-breaking milestones for the LGBT community.
Torch Song follows the life of Arnold Beckoff, a Jewish
drag queen who makes it his life journey to find happiness in 1970s
New York in the midst of homophobia and intolerance, even by his own
family and partners. The play chronicles the all too human journey
about the families we're born into, the families we choose, and the
battles to bring them all home. Hilarious and heart-wrenching Torch
Song follows Arnold Beckoff's odyssey to find happiness in New York.
All he wants is a husband, a child and a pair of bunny slippers that
fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he
needs one thing more: respect. Join Arnold on this all too human
journey about the families we're born into, the families we choose
and the battles to bring them all home.
Torch Song is a
two-act revival of Harvey Fierstein's original 1983 Torch
Song Trilogy. As the original title indicates, Torch Song
Trilogy consisted of three plays when it originally opened on
Broadway and was trimmed to two-acts for an off-Broadway revival at
the Tony Kieser Theatre in 2018 that later transferred to Broadway at
The Hayes Theater in 2019 and
earned another Tony
nomination for Best Revival
of a
Play.

About the Playwright:
Harvey Fierstein made his professional acting debut at New
York's famed La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club (La MaMa
E.T.C.) in 1971 in Andy Warhol's only play, Pork. He followed that
with appearances in more than 60 Off-Off-Broadway productions before
he began his playwriting career. His breakthrough play was the
underground hit, Torch Song Trilogy, which transferred
Off-Broadway in 1981, and then to Broadway in 1982 where it won the
Best Play Tony Award as well as Drama Desk, Obie, and Dramatist Guild
awards.
