About
the Play:
Under Wraps is a full-length drama by Robert Chafe.
Mark is a nervous gay with a crush
on a good-looking stranger. David is probably heterosexual but
friendly enough toward Mark to keep him both interested and in a
perpetual state of confusion. Under Wraps
is a lyrical and
laugh-out-load story of hopeless love and hard-won acceptance.
Under
Wraps is
about two men who are intensely attracted.
The moment Mark meets David his world is thrown off balance. Who
could have predicted finding love in a furniture store, or finding it
with an unemployed lifeguard? But despite their immediate connection,
Mark isn't sure if David is gay. Mark isn't even sure if Mark is gay.
As he falls deeper in love, Mark works desperately to make David
nothing more than a friend and to make that enough. Filled with
hopeful exhilaration and devastating missed opportunities, Under
Wraps nimbly tracks one man's
tumultuous quest to finally love himself and let it all out.
Under Wraps premiered in
1997 at the historic LSPU Hall (so named as it was formerly owned by
the Longshoremen's Protective Union) in the heart of downtown St.
John's, Newfoundland. It
played
to three
sold out runs before
touring to Halifax, Calgary, Banff, and Vancouver.
