About the Play:

"Edward Allan Baker is the real thing, a hard hitting East Coast playwright, with a firm command of the issues of the day." — John Patrick Shanley, Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright

The volume Up, Down, Strange, Charmed, Beauty, and Truth; Lila on the Wall; and Mafia on Prozac contains three one-act plays by Edward Allan Baker. Up, Down, Strange, Charmed, Beauty, and Truth and Lila on the Wall are intense studies of modern issues, while Mafia on Prozac is a dark comedy. These one-act plays may be presented separately or combined with his best known play Dolores as an evening of entertainment.

Up, Down, Strange, Charmed, Beauty, and Truth: A beaten-down, 18 year old girl needs to convince her favourite down-on-his-luck uncle to free her and her sister from their crazy, violent and drug addicted mother. Thanks to a series of wholly organic yet startlingly unexpected plot twists, neither the characters nor their situations are how they seemed when the play began and salvation, if it is to be achieved, comes at a terrible price and may not be attainable to all. Edward Allan Baker tells a wrenching tale of loves found and lost, of broken hearts and betrayal. (Cast: 2 female, 1 male)

Lila on the Wall: We are on location with a television news crew who have come to follow up a three-month-old story about a woman who saw Jesus' face on a graffiti-laden wall. The reporter, Lila, is keen to make her name with the station, but the woman who saw it is off on a tour in Italy, and Carl, a young cameraman who prides himself in figuring out "emotional landscapes," is determined to make Lila believe in something again. In a world where meaning is processed for our entertainment, playwright Edward Allan Baker shows that reality is right in front of us, and that mystical experiences are to be found in the strangest of places. (Cast: 1 female, 1 male)

Mafia on Prozac: Jay and Tee are a couple of aging Mafia hit-men on prescribed antidepressants who are sitting by the ocean and reflecting on how their lives turned out. The man that they've been ordered to kill, Matt, awaits his fate tied-up in a burlap sack. When Al Capone visits in a dream, the outraged and desperate Matt gets dragged into refereeing the hit-men's argument about the Mob's future. (Cast: 3 male)

What people say:

"Edward Allan Baker tells a wrenching story of loves found and lost, of broken hearts and betrayal. [Up, Down, Strange, Charmed, Beauty, and Truth] inflames the scarred tissue of family relationships already torn and raw from the chaos of life." — The New York Times

"…truly inspired moments of comedy…[In] Edward Allan Baker's Mafia on Prozac, a pair of hit men, owing more to Tom Stoppard than to Mario Puzo, argue over such highfalutin' issues as fate versus free will." — The New York Times

"…a stirring little fable. That [Lila on the Wall] turns out inspiring rather than maudlin is…due to the strength of the punchy, honest writing." — BroadwayWorld.com
