About the Play:
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike has long been a favourite of acting teachers for Male Monologues.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a full-length comedy
by Christopher Durang. Middle-aged
siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home where the commiserate about
their mundane lives. Suddenly, their movie-star sister, Masha, sweeps
in with her new boy-toy, Spike, and the comedy flies!
Especially
recommended for community theatre productions.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is the master of
comedy's cheeky homage to all things Chekhov. Middle-aged siblings
Vanya and Sonia live in the family home in Bucks County,
Pennsylvania. Named after Chekhov's characters by their
theater-enthusiast professor parents, Vanya and Sonia have yet to
grow up. After spending their adulthood looking after their now-dead
parents, neither has a job, and money is provided by their movie-star
sister, Masha. Suddenly, their stolid lives are shaken when Masha
swoops in and announces she plans to sell the house. Also on the
scene are a clairvoyant cleaning lady, Cassandra, who can predict the
future, Marsha's gorgeous but dimwitted 20-something boy toy, Spike,
and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness
somewhat worries the imperious Masha. By the end of their impromptu
family reunion, this lovable bunch won't ever be the same!
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike premiered in 2012 at
the McCarter Theatre in New Jersey. The play and its original cast
ran Off-Broadway in 2012 and then transferred to Broadway in 2013 at
the Golden Theatre winning the 2013 Tony Award for Best
Play as well as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play
and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Play. The play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and is regularly performed in
regional, high school, college, and community theatre
productions.

What people say:
"Broad comic acting is raised
to the level of high art ... deliriously funny ... a heedless good
time." — New York Times
"…riotous ... the show's a
ton of fun even if you can't tell your Seagull from your Uncle Vanya
... This is the kind of full-on comedy that's sadly rare on
Broadway." — New York Post
"Hugely entertaining ... few
contemporary playwrights have proven as deft as Durang at mining both
the absurdity and the dangers of human folly ... in its own
deliciously madcap way, the new work offers some keen insights into
the challenges and agonies of twenty-first-century life." —
USA Today
"Everyone has a monologue that
is nothing short of hilarious. (You'll find yourself using that word
a lot.) ... You've only spent a weekend with these people, but you
might want to spend the rest of your life with Vanya and
Sonia and Masha and Spike." — Huffington Post
