About the Play:
The Water's Edge has long been a favourite of acting teachers for Female Monologues.
The Water's Edge is a full-length drama by Theresa
Rebeck. A man attempts to reconnect with a family from which he
has been long-estranged. The reunion is complicated by the fact that
his ex-wife believes he is responsible for a past tragedy. What
happens when people believe that the only way to heal is to hurt?
The Water's Edge centers on a family coping with its grief. A
scorned husband and father, Richard, has returned – with younger
girlfriend Lucy in tow – to the family home
he abandoned some 17 years ago. Now a wealthy investment manager, he wants to
reclaim the lakeside home his father bequeathed him. The old place has tenants, however – his incensed ex-wife Helen and grown-up
children, college dropout son Nate and hostile daughter Erica, still live there. Helen, who still blames him for
a devastating loss in their family's past, decides to take matters
into her own hands. But what is the trauma that still haunts the
family? And will Richard's homecoming bring the much-needed chance
for the family to heal, or are the memories and hurt of the past
still too raw? With theatrical imagery and heightened emotions, this
tense domestic drama turns shocking as a startling twist is revealed,
leading to a stunning climax. Based loosely on a narrative in
Aeschylus' Greek tragedy The Oresteia, The Water's Edge is a searing family drama about loss, grief, revenge, and
repercussions.
The Water's Edge premiered in 2004 at the Williamstown
Theatre Festival, as part of their 50th anniversary season. The
Off-Broadway premiere was in 2006 at Second Stage Theater in New York
City and the West Coast premiere was in 2011 at the Lankershim Arts
Center in North Hollywood. The play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and has been performed in regional, college, and community theatre productions.

What people say:
"A stylishly acted mix of
classical darkness and latter-day levity! ...Theresa Rebeck
has a gift for lively dialogue teasingly layered in ambivalence."
— The New York Times
"A shocking hybrid of
contemporary drama and Greek tragedy." — Newsday
"An absorbing domestic drama
with smart, often dryly humorous dialogue." — Variety
"Compelling, brilliant and
affecting! It must be seen! There is no question that Theresa
Rebeck is one of the strongest playwrights of her
generation." — Backstage
"In her thrilling two-act play Theresa Rebeck allows the right amount of foreshadowing. The Water's Edge marches along with a degree of inevitability, because it's certain things are not going to end well. But ... the beauty of Rebeck's craft is the thrill of watching this intensely raw family drama unfold." — ArtsBeat LA
