About the Play:
Well is a full-length comedy by Lisa Kron. Step
into the mind of the
Tony-award-winning playwright
with this hilarious, self-referential journey that explores
everything from chronic allergies, to community organizing, and most
importantly, to her zany, unpredictable relationship with her
liberally progressive hypochondriac mother.
Well is a comedic memory
play about mothers and daughters. Told by Lisa, the onstage
playwright, about her mother Ann, the play explores the dynamics of
health, family and community with the story of her mother's
extraordinary ability to heal a changing neighbourhood,
despite her inability to heal herself. In this "solo show with
other people in it," Lisa recounts her childhood in Lansing,
Michigan, and beyond and
asks
the provocative question "Are we responsible for our own
illness?" But the answers she gets are much more complicated
than she bargained for when the play spins dangerously out of control
into riotously funny and unexpected territory.
Well
opened to critical acclaim on Broadway at the Longacre Theater in
2006 and received two Tony nominations. It previously premiered at
the Public Theater in 2004 and was listed among the year's best plays
by the New York Times, the Associated Press, the
Newark Star Ledger, Backstage and the Advocate.
The show enjoyed
an acclaimed run at A.C.T. in San Francisco and
has become a popular choice for regional
and community theatre productions.
