About the Book:

Attention comedy fans and comedy writers!

In the book What Are You Laughing At? writer and producer Dan O'Shannon presents an entirely new approach to comedy theory. If you want to understand the bigger picture what is comedy, why do we respond to it the way we do then you've come to the right place.

Subtitled A Comprehensive Guide to the Comedic Event, this book presents all the variables that can come into play when we come into contact with comedy. It challenges long-held beliefs and shows how the three main theories of comedy (incongruity, superiority, and relief) are not in conflict; but rather, work as parts of a larger model. There are many examples pulled from author Dan O'Shannon's own experiences, writing for shows such as Cheers, Frasier, and Modern Family. By the end of What Are You Laughing At?, you'll have an understanding of just what happens when man meets comedy. This book will change the way you hear laughter.

What people say:

"As hard as it would be to define 'the meaning of life,' defining 'comedy' is harder. And somehow Dan O'Shannon does it in his insightful, comprehensive, and funny new book, What Are You Laughing At?... I’ve been writing humor for 35 years and I learned stuff." — Ken Levine, Writer/producer MASH and The Simpsons

"O'Shannon is not your ordinary television writer-producer. What Are You Laughing At?... touches on comic theory, social interaction, modes of communication, receptor factors, incongruity and comedic entropy. He's more the intellectual-professorial-television writer hyphenate — even though his credits read like every major TV comedy of the past 20 years." — Hollywood Reporter

"Creative individuals usually have difficulty explaining how they get their ideas. But O'Shannon's presentation of how comedy works is excellent and detailed ... This is a book for anyone curious about the nature of humor. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers." — Choice
