About
the Play:
Why Do We Laugh? is a one-act comedy by Stephen Gregg.
Eight actors play two characters at
age 6, 16, 45 and 67 to show the audience how people can change each
other throughout their lives. Why Do We Laugh?
is as a comical yet poignant story about a lifelong love story and what it means
to grow old together. Especially
recommended for school and contest use.
Why Do We Laugh?
is a fast-paced comedy about about a couple's memories of four periods of their lives. At age 6, Meredith Wilfred
loves to tell people that she hates her neighbour, Andrew Powers. At
age 16, she tells Andrew the same thing but goes to the dance with
him anyway. At 45, Meredith and Andy have a great deal to tell each
other: most married couples do. And, even at 66, Meredith is still
learning about, and from, Andrew. Why Do We Laugh?
is a fine contest play because
it is both easy to stage and a challenge. All eight characters –
two people at four different times in their lives – are on-stage at
the same time. The result is a play about love (and hate) and the way
people change each other.
Why Do We Laugh? is a contest winning play that has been
endorsed by both Dramatics magazine and Other Stages.
Cast: 4 female, 4 male
