About the Play:
You Are Here is a full-length drama by Daniel MacIvor. In fluidly
madcap style, one of Canada's most distinctive and influential
post-modern playwrights takes us on a voyage in flashback through the
not-so-extraordinary life of a woman named Alison who looks back on
her life and loves in the worlds of entertainment journalism and
film. Along with her friends, lovers and work colleagues, we find out
how Alison got from there to here.
You Are Here enters the mind of Alison, a woman tracing her
life from a once-idealistic journalist to meaningless disappointment
in the film business. The journey begins with Alison as an
independent, unconventional woman, who is "never the marrying
type," yet unfortunately marries psychologist and wannabe
screenwriter Jerry. As her marriage strains under the weight of
Jerry's aspirations, she produces his script using her media
connections to film director Thomas, who has sold out his talent to
commercial starlet Diane. Bitterly betrayed by Jerry and Diane and
impenetrable to the help offered by Thomas and her oldest friend,
Richard, Alison lapses into alcoholism, despair and the arms of a
lethal lothario.
You Are Here premiered in 2000 at the National Theatre
School of Canada (Canada's
Julliard) while he wad writer-in-residence. The Toronto
premiere was in in 2001 at Theatre Passe Muraille. Since
then the play has been successfully staged at several professional
theatres across Canada, and
has been mounted by community theatres.

What people say:
"MacIvor … once again tears
down the fourth wall and replaces its phony illusion with a more
direct yet still mysterious bond with the audience." — The
Globe and Mail
"Daniel MacIvor's
script for You Are Here is so harsh but so
rewarding that it's downright cathartic. This show is one of the best
things you'll ever see, and you'll be laughing so hard that its
impact will sneak up on you." — Georgia Straight
