About the Play:

All Over is a full-length drama by Edward Albee. Wife, Mistress, Best Friend, Son, and Daughter hold a vigil at the deathbed of a famous public figure. Tensions mount, recriminations fly, and power plays ensue as they ponder their intertwined existence. Uneasy alliances are revealed, and all are self-deluded and self-destructive. All Over is another Edward Albee indictment of family life that begins archly and ultimately explodes.

All Over is a unique domestic drama that opens with a sick man in bed, surrounded by those in his life, all in middle age or older. In an alcove of a town house a famous and immensely successful man lies dying, literally on his death-bed. In the anteroom, awaiting his death are his wife, his mistress, his best friend and lawyer, his feckless son and self-absorbed daughter. He is attended by an elderly physician and a nurse, while members of the media who have taken over the first floor, hungrily await the latest updates on his condition and television crews clamour off stage. As they wait for what seems to be the great man's inevitable end, his "loved ones" recollect past loves, wage wars new and old, make unexpected alliances, and seek some sort of understanding, fulfillment or closure, until they are given word that it is "all over."

All Over premiered in 1971 on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre. The director was John Gielgud, and Colleen Dewhurst and Jessica Tandy led the Broadway cast. Since then the play has enjoyed strong regional revivals at professional theatres across the US and has been mounted by community theatres.

What people say:

"It is a lovely, poignant and deeply felt play. In no way at all is it an easy play this formal minuet of death, this symphony ironically celebrating death's dominion ... [is] a series of almost operatic arias.... A delicate and lovely play." — The New York Times

"Done with brilliance...Fascinating, chilling, unsettling and oh so eloquent drama ." — New York Newsday
