About
the Play:
Cinderella Waltz is a full-length comedy by Don Nigro.
This is a twisted and hilarious retelling of the world's most popular
fairy tale. Cinderella Waltz combines different versions of
the tale – including the familiar and charming Perrault version and
the darker, more ancient and disturbing tale recorded by the brothers
Grimm – with dashes of Beauty and the Beast and Snow White thrown
in to create
a modern fairy tale. Especially
recommended for school and contest use.
Cinderella Waltz tells the story of Rosey Snow who is
trapped in a fairy tale world that is, by turns, funny and a little
frightening, with her stepsisters Goneril and Regan, her demented
stepmother, her lecherous father, a bewildered Prince, a fairy
godmother (who happens to sing bewildered sailor songs), a troll, and
a possibly homicidal village idiot. Grotesque farce and romantic
fantasy blend in a fairy tale for adults. Veering far from the land
of Disney, grotesque farce and romantic fantasy blend with a twist of
Monty Python to bring you an adult fairy tale full of laughs ...
Cinderella Waltz is not the children's story you remember!
Cinderella Waltz premiered in 1978 at Indiana State
University's Summer Repertory Theater (now called Crossroads
Repertory Theatre) in Terre Haute, Indiana. Since
then the play had regional premieres at professional theatres across
the US and has been performed in regional, middle school,
high school, college, and community theatre productions.

What people say:
"... delivers laughs and leads
to rethinking what constitutes a truly happy ending ... Cinderella
Waltz ... offers a philosophical search for truth by
examining the choices made by his quirky fairy-tale characters,
especially Cinderella as she considers the all-too-common predicament
of whether to choose a life of riches as opposed to a life of true
happiness following her heart." — BroadwayWorld
