About
the Play:
A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking has long been a favourite
of acting teachers for Female/Female Scenes.
A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking is a
full-length comedy by John Ford Noonan. This two-character
scene study staple takes place in the suburban New York kitchen of
prim Maude Mix, who is having a tough day: her husband is off on a
weekend spree with his secretary and she can't get rid of the pesky
neighbour who has just moved up from Texas. Both demeanours mix like
oil and water but the two eventually become friends and allies
against their unfaithful husbands.
A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking centers on
Maude Mix, a straight laced and uptight New York housewife living in
an upscale suburban neighbourhood. Her husband is off on a periodic
extramarital jaunt with his secretary and her perfectly
super-programmed day is thrown into comical chaos by new neighbour
Hannah Mae Bindler, a raucous and free-spirited transplant from
Texas. Hannah Mae's insistence that the two become friends because
"my back door faces your back door" seems absurd given
their vast differences – but they nevertheless find themselves
learning from each other as their bond is forged over coffee and the
two eventually join forces against their errant and erring husbands.
John Ford Noonan's lively comedy about friendship demonstrates
that fulfillment can come from the most unlikely people and places.
A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking premiered in
1980 at the at the Astor Place Theatre in the NoHo section of
Manhattan. This Off-Broadway hit originally starred Susan Sarandon
and Eileen Brennan and ran for more than a year. Works for two
actresses were in short supply at the time, and the play was soon
being performed all over the United States, its humour striking a
universal chord. Since then it has become a
favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and a staple of small and
regional theatres, partly because it is such a good acting vehicle
for women from twenty to fifty.
