About the Book:
Rare book, very limited quantities available
Shakespeare's Globe is proving to be one of the great success stories in the theatre world. As well as Shakespeare, its programme includes plays by many of his contemporaries. In fact, for every play by Shakespeare there are over ten surviving plays by other writers from the same era. A selection of these plays have been brought back into print as Globe Quartos. These non-Shakespearean plays of the English Renaissance are being rediscovered and revived with great success at Shakespeare's Globe both in full production and in staged readings.
The Merry Devil of Edmonton lay unperformed from the early seventeenth century until the 1980s. Dating from around 1604, it was first published in 1608 and was performed at the Globe Theatre by the King's Men. With its scenes of magic, deer poaching, and abduction from a nunnery, The Merry Devil of Edmonton combines romance and comedy in a highly entertaining way, and was a favourite production on the seventeenth century stage. This anonymous version was revived both in a reading at the Globe in the winter of 1999 and subsequently in exploratory workshops on the Globe stage.
