About
the Play:
Mirror, Mirror is a full-length dramatic comedy by Sarah
Treem. In this dark comedy, based on Snow White, ten teenagers
love, lose, betray and revenge each other over one autumnal weekend
in a kingdom far, far away. It is a precarious landscape where magic
lurks behind make-up, mirrors and memories.
Mirror, Mirror takes the classic story of Snow White and
puts it into the 21st century, dealing with issues of body image,
sexual orientation, racism, and the struggle of the high school
experience. Every high school prom is the same: fancy dresses, prom
kings and queens, and, of course, drama. In the bathroom Gretchen
Black, the most popular girl in school, lights a cigarette and asks
the mirror on the wall who's the fairest of them all. The mirror
shows her a horrible witch instead of her own reflection. Gretchen
puts the cigarette out in her armpit and the witch disappears.
Moments later a mysterious new girl named Rose White arrives at
Homecoming. She has no hips or chest to speak of, but her skin shines
white as snow and her lips are as red as the rose. Rose is
transgendered, but still manages to be the prettiest at the prom.
Gretchen Black decides she can't handle someone else being prettier
and more popular than her. She knows that things have to change so
she doesn't lose her boyfriend, Badger Biers, and even more
important, her popularity. Take a wild ride with Mirror, Mirror,
a modern day Snow White from the writer of HBO's House of Cards and
In Treatment and see just how these characters overcome the crazy
prom weekend.
Mirror, Mirror premiered in 2005
at the Yale School of Drama
(also known as YSD) in New Haven, Connecticut. Since
then the play has been mounted by high schools, colleges, and
community theatres.
