About
the Play:
Vampire Lesbians of Sodom is a full-length farce by Charles
Busch. One of the longest running plays in Off Broadway history, this truly bizarre entertainment of the Rocky Horror genre
is about vampires, has nothing to do with lesbians and takes the
audience from ancient Sodom to the Hollywood of the 1920s and ends
up in present day Las Vegas.
Vampire Lesbians of Sodom is an outrageous and Campy comedy that follows the eternal lives of two fatally
seductive vampiresses, one who was turned by the other (to vampirism, not lesbianism), centuries ago in the ancient city of Sodom. Their immortal catfight rages through time with a dramatic flair-up
during Hollywood's silent movie era when the two vampires become
competing film stars. A final scene in contemporary Las Vegas sees them finally reach a truce. Moving between histrionics of classic horror cinema and the cheerful nastiness of the backstage, behind the scenes melodrama of All About Eve, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom sparkles with spectacle, homage and double entendre.
Vampire Lesbians of Sodom premiered in 1984 at the Limbo
Lounge in Manhattan's East Village, where it became so popular it
moved to off-Broadway in 1985 at the Provincetown Playhouse, where it
ran for five years and is one of the longest running plays in
Off-Broadway history.
