About
the Play:
Sez
She is a full-length comedy by Jane Martin. Women count,
as do their stories. In Sez She we meet women who have a lot
of heart and who are working hard to find their place and their
meaning in today's world. Their stories are unique and yet not
strange as they explore the deeper conversations of women we all know
and meet every single day.
Sez
She is told in a series of intimate and revealing monologues;
tales of humour, sadness, nostalgia and even caustic political
commentary – especially gender issues. Written to be performed by
at least five actresses playing multiple characters, this sequel to
Jane Martin's last monologue play picks up where Vital
Signs left off – in these funnier, stranger days of the 21st
century. Revelling in virtues of brevity that include hilarity,
surprise and homespun philosophy, these monologues roam the range of
contemporary perspective on everything from relationships to sexual
harassment to sleeping in theatres to kindness to the erotic appeals
of silence. Whether biking across Massachusetts with 23,000 lawyers,
or reflecting on the meaning of a Pekingese dog with a picket fence
stake through its heart, these characters know how to take the stage
and make the most of their five minutes of fame.
Sez
She premiered in
2006 at Illusion Theatre in Minneapolis and received Minnesota's IVEY
Award for Best Production in the Twin Cities and
was a finalist for the American Theater Critics Association's Best
New Play Award. Since
then the play has
been
produced
at
professional theatres and is regularly performed in college theatre
productions as a showcase of student talent.

What
people say:
"Enormously
entertaining, more like a Disney World ride aimed at adults. Lean
back, take a deep breath and grasp the handrail firmly." —

About
the Playwright:
Jane
Martin, apparently from Kentucky, has been referred to as
"America's best known, unknown playwright." The name Jane
Martin is widely believed to be a pseudonym. She has been nominated
for the Pulitzer prize, and won the American Theatre Critics
Association New Play Award twice. But she has never made any public
appearances or spoken about any of her works. Nor has she ever given
an interview. No biographical details are known about her. No
photographs of Ms. Martin have ever been published.
