About
the Play:
Love and Human Remains is a full-length dramatic comedy by
Brad Fraser. This
psycho-thriller follows the lives of several sexually frustrated
"thirty-somethings" who try to learn the meaning of love
during a time in which a serial killer is terrorizing the city. Love
and Human Remains will take
your perception of love, devotion, and companionship and set it
ablaze.
Love and Human Remains is
an edgy, provocative, dark-humoured
drama about the intertwined lives of seven individuals. This
critically-acclaimed Canadian
classic explores every
aspect of raw human emotion and takes the audience on an emotional
journey to places often hard to explore. It centres
on David, a failed actor watching his twenties tick away. He
shares a place with his
book-reviewing roommate Candy, whom he dated before coming out as
gay. Together, with Candy who
dabbles in both same-sex and heterosexual affairs,
his best friend Bernie, and a psychic dominatrix friend Benita, David
and Candy encounter
a number of seductive strangers on their search for love and sex.
However, the games turn ugly when it appears one of them might be a
serial killer. Love and Human Remains
is a compelling study of young adults groping for meaning in a
senseless world.
Originally titled Unidentified Human Remains and the Nature of
True Love, the play was first produced in 1989 at Alberta Theatre Projects during its National playRites
Festival of New Plays in Calgary. Despite the controversial nature of
the play, word spread quickly and every performance was standing room
only despite its violence, nudity, frank dialogue and sexual
explicitness. The play made its American debut in 1991 at the
now-defunct Halsted Theatre Center in Chicago. It ran for over a year
and received rave reviews and continued to New York where it was
wildly celebrated and named one of the Top 10 Plays of the Year by
Time Magazine. Since then, Love and Human Remains
has been produced in every major Canadian city, as well as
internationally. It received the London Evening Standard Award for
best new play and the Los Angeles Critics' Award.
